Thursday September 6th, 2012 08:50 Episode 55: Coal Minin’

This week on the show, Mr. Higgins of Hammicus inspired a double feature of coal miners versus coal companies

The first film we review is a clash of titans – Richard Harris and Sean Connery in THE MOLLY MAGUIRES

The second film we review is MATEWAN, a 1987 John Sayles film about a union dispute in Matewan, WV in the 1920s.

Aaaaaand maybe a little pinko political talkin.

Just a little

Listeners wanted it, and now yooooouuuuuu got it!

We subject Zom to an empty area in his film viewing history: Dario Argento.

First we discuss THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, not only Argento’s first giallo, but also his first feature film overall!

Then we try our hand at reviewing SUSPIRIA… far less giallo, far more supernatural Euro-horror

Will we chase Zom off or wet his whistle for more??

We enter our second year of the podcast with a couple recommendations from listener Heavenztrash. He champions the work of South Korean actor Shin Ha-Kyun and wanted to have us review two good examples.

The first film reviewed is 2003’s SAVE THE GREEN PLANET in which Ha-Kyun kidnaps individuals he feels are aliens from Andromeda.

The second film we review is 2006’s NO MERCY FOR THE RUDE where Ha-Kyun plays a mute assassin who kills assholes to save up money for a tongue operation. Yessss

Thanks to HT for the recommendations!

Thursday August 16th, 2012 22:10 Episode 52: The Silva and The Gold III – One Year Anniversary Edition

DEEDS NOT WORDS

We wish a happy one year anniversary birthday type thing to our beloved podcast this week as we bring you a double feature of our bread and butter. A Henry Silva and a Dolph “Gold” Lundgren double feature
The first film we review is not exactly a Henry Silva… but then again, there aren’t many… but rather a Hal Needham almost-comedy action sci fi type GI Joe ripoff thingy. A feathered Barry Bostwick flying on a motorcycle in MEGAFORCE

Then we cover a 1990 Dolph fronted vehicle… and stay somewhat in the same sci-fi realm… with the alienistic I COME IN PEACE.

What a way to ring in a year on the show!
We love you all and thank you for your support. We hope to keep bringing the thunder for you.

And by thunder, I mean gas.

Music this week:
Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach – Tears At The Birthday Party
Guided By Voices – Burning Flag Birthday Suit
The Smiths – Unhappy Birthday

Thursday August 9th, 2012 15:54 Episode 51: Ultimate Warriors

A bit of a tenuous link this week for our double feature, as we pair up two movies that probably have more in common thematically than the reason we have paired them up. We bring you an Ultimate Warrior double feature!

The first film we review is actually called The Ultimate Warrior…. a 1975 post-apocalyptic film directed by Robert Clouse of Enter the Dragon fame, and starring Yul Brenner of all kinds of stuff fame.

The second film is a direct-to-video PM Entertainment picture… so you probably know what you’re getting into there if you’re familiar with that production studio. It’s called Firepower starring Gary Daniels, Chad McQueen, and THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR HIMSELF James Warrior Hellwig.

Music this week:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Warrior
Phoenix – On Fire
The Misfits – Violent World

Friday August 3rd, 2012 02:28 Episode 50: Born of Glam

For our 50th episode, we decided to get musical! The theme for our double feature this week is characters born of glam rock.

The first film we cover is 1998’s Velvet Goldmine – a dramatized/fictionalized telling of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and others in the height of the glam rock movement!

The second film we review is 2007’s Control – Anton Corbijn’s biopic of Joy Division’s front man Ian Curtis. (He listens to and is influenced by Bowie, so the connection is there!)

Check out all the awesome musical feedback this week too!

Music this week:
Brian Eno – Baby’s On Fire
Joy Division – Transmission (live from Les Bains Douches)
Lou Reed – Satellite of Love

In honor of the passing of Ernest Borgnine on July 8, 2012, we asked listeners on our Facebook group to name two films of his for us to review. Here’s what we went with!

first we delve into the now classic western The Wild Bunch from 1969.

Next we change gears a little and review the disaster flick that started the disaster flick craze of the 70s… 1972’s The Poseidon Adventure.

Epic long show!

RIP Ernest

Friday July 20th, 2012 01:44 Episode 48: Sweaty Flesh in the Sweaty South

This week we cover a couple films about young Southern ladies in not-so-glorious Southern homes in a way being “kept” for something….

The first is a Tennessee Williams story from 1956 called Baby Doll… a near-20 year old who sleeps in a crib and has promised to consumate her almost 1-year old marriage on her 20th birthday with her middle-aged husband

The next film is 2006’s Black Snake Moan about an older African American gentleman who chains a young white lady to his radiator to help cure her of her ills.

Come share in the vitriol and the great Chinstroker and Punter say

Music this week:
Chuck Berry –  Oh Baby Doll
Blind Lemon Jefferson -Black Snake Moan
Black Keys – When The Lights Go Out

We got a special treat this week and received a screener to review! We teamed it up with another film to make a tough entertaining gals double… Bitches Get Stiches!

The first film we review is Kansas City Bomber… a roller derby film from 1972 starring the lovely lovely Raquel Welch.

Then we review our screener… GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling!

It’s coming soon… a story about the short-lived but well loved variety show type women’s wrestling organization from the late 1980s.

Thank you very much to the makers of the film for letting us review it! Check out information about their film here:

Thursday July 5th, 2012 16:56 Episode 46: Punk Rock Westerns

This week Loaf decides to toss a couple punk rockers in the wild west at Zom and see what sticks.

Good luck!

The first film we review is Dudes from 1987 starring John Cryer. Cree. Does new wave Duckie Cryer have a leg up on missed punk rock by 10 years Grant Cryer?

The second film is our second Alex Cox review on the show… that being 1987’s Straight to Hell Returns. Returns is a 2010 red0 in a sense where a couple scenes are added in and there is some additional gore not found in the original.

Music this week:
David Bowie – All The Young Dudes
The Clash – Straight to Hell
Zander Schloss – Salsa y Ketchup
